Asarco Settles Deaf Miners' $3M Claims

Law360, New York (August 27, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Bankrupt Asarco LLC has sought court permission to settle compensation claims by former employees who lost their hearing while working in the company's Tennessee mines.

In a motion filed Friday, the copper-mining company asked Texas Judge Richard Schmidt to approve the settlement with 44 miners who have asserted more than $3 million in claims.

The Tuscon, Arizona-based company told the court the settlement was designed to avoid litigation and further accrual of interest of the workers' liens and to secure the company's release from the claims....
