DOL Withdraws Controversial Child Farm Labor Rules

Law360, New York (April 27, 2012, 4:13 PM EDT) -- Under pressure from conservative lawmakers and farming groups, the U.S. Department of Labor on Thursday withdrew a proposed rule that would have tightened the restrictions on child labor in the agricultural industry.

The DOL first issued a proposal in September to revise the agricultural hazardous occupations orders under the Fair Labor Standards Act, which bar workers younger than 16 from taking on certain tasks, noting that the rules had not been updated since they originally took effect in 1970.
