American Airlines Sues To Block 10,000-Worker Union Vote

Law360, New York (May 3, 2012, 4:16 PM EDT) -- Bankrupt American Airlines Inc. sued the National Mediation Board in Texas federal court Wednesday to block a nearly 10,000-employee union election scheduled for May 17, saying a new law requires 50 percent of employees to show interest in unionizing before a vote is scheduled.

The Communications Workers of America applied to the NMB, which handles labor issues in the airline and railroad industries, on Dec. 7, seeking to represent about 9,400 of American's passenger service employees, according to the complaint.
