Law360, Los Angeles (May 07, 2012, 4:25 PM ET) -- A California federal jury said Monday that Google Inc.'s Android mobile platform infringes Oracle Corp.'s Java copyrights, but couldn't determine whether Google's use of the programming language was protected under the fair-use doctrine.
The San Francisco jury also found that Google infringed Oracle copyrights by using nine lines of Java code, a relatively minuscule portion of the overall Android platform. Oracle is entitled only to statutory damages of between $200 and $150,000 on that specific finding, Google spokesman Jim Prosser said in an email.
