Force-Fed Foie Gras Violates Law, Threatens Health: Suit

Law360, Chicago (May 11, 2012, 7:19 PM EDT) -- Animal advocacy groups sued the U.S. Department of Agriculture in California on Wednesday, alleging that the department has violated the Poultry Products Inspection Act by allowing the sale of force-fed foie gras, which they say necessarily comes from diseased birds and is unfit for human consumption.

In their federal court complaint, the Animal Legal Defense Fund and its co-plaintiffs say that the force-feeding process used to create foie gras, called gavage, is engineered to induce acute hepatic lipidosis, or fatty liver disease, in ducks or geese....
