NRDC Pushes To Reopen FDA Suit Over Soap Chemicals

Law360, New York (May 14, 2012, 7:33 PM EDT) -- The Natural Resources Defense Council on Monday asked the Second Circuit to reopen a suit aimed at forcing the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to regulate anti-bacterial agents triclosan and triclocarban, saying their use in soaps could lead to the rise of so-called superbugs.

A lawyer for the environmental group told a three-judge panel that the chemicals, which are common ingredients in anti-bacterial soaps, might cause drug-resistant superbugs to evolve, particularly when the soaps are used in hospitals.
