Coburn Asks HHS To Block Usage Of Exhaustive Disease Guide

Tom Coburn, R-Okla., called Tuesday for federal health officials to halt implementation of a new disease-classification system, saying its granular detail covering injuries sustained in opera houses and wounds inflicted by turtles could be an unaffordable burden on medical providers.

Responding to industry pressure, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services last month pushed back to October 2014 the time by which hospitals and doctors must adopt the 10th edition of the International Classification of Diseases, known as ICD-10.
