AEP Pulls $1B Coal Plant Retrofit Plan, Citing Costs

Law360, New York (May 30, 2012, 7:59 PM EDT) -- An American Electric Power Co. Inc. unit on Wednesday withdrew its bid to install nearly $1 billion in pollution controls on a coal power plant in northeastern Kentucky, saying it needed to consider cheaper alternatives to complying with federal air quality standards.

Kentucky Power Co. said retrofitting the 1,100-megawatt Big Sandy Power Plant would have resulted in a 30 percent increase in electricity rates, and in a one-page motion asked the Public Service Commission of Kentucky to cancel its application to upgrade the facility.
