United Healthcare Sues Surgery Firm Over $39M Kickback Plot

Law360, New York (June 19, 2012, 7:33 PM EDT) -- United Healthcare Services Inc. on Monday sued a Northern California network of surgery centers for allegedly masterminding a $39 million rip-off in which physicians who referred patients were paid massive kickbacks funded by egregious overbilling practices.

According to the complaint in California court, patients were offered waivers of co-pays and other fees if they received care at Bay Area Surgical Management LLC's out-of-network centers, which don’t have a contract with United.
