U.S. Sues Illinois In Battle Over Illegal Workers

Law360, New York (September 25, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Accusing the state of thwarting efforts to curb illegal immigration, the U.S. Department of Justice has sued Illinois in a bid to ban it from enforcing a law it says flies in the face of efforts to crack down on unauthorized workers in the United States.

The federal government wants the court to declare invalid and unenforceable Illinois' Right to Privacy at Work Act – which prevents employers from using an online worker-verification program to check the immigration status of new hires.
