Asarco Strikes Deal With Texas Over El Paso Site

Law360, New York (October 1, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Bankrupt copper producer Asarco LLC has asked a judge to approve a $13 million settlement with Texas and federal officials to cover environmental damage caused by its El Paso smelter, conceding it was “potentially responsible” for some of the costs.

While objecting to a $68 million claim by the state over damage to its coast, the beleaguered mining company has agreed to resolve a separate claim for the cost of cleanup of toxic soil in residential yards and community properties at its El Paso County Metals...
