Mayo Clinic Pays $1M To Settle False Billing Claims Suit

Law360, New York (August 3, 2012, 3:20 PM EDT) -- The Mayo Clinic will pay $1 million to settle a whistleblower suit accusing the Minnesota-based health care provider of billing Medicare and Medicaid for lab work it never performed, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Thursday.

The settlement ends a nearly five-year-long fight over the claims, originally brought by attorney and former Mayo neurologist David Ketroser and two Mayo patients, claiming the clinic had routinely overbilled the federal government for tissue slides used in pathology services and failed to retain the slides, as required by law....
