Judge Voids CyberFone Patent In Warner Bros., CBS Suits

Law360, New York (August 22, 2012, 5:50 PM EDT) -- A telecommunications patent asserted by CyberFone Systems LLC against dozens of companies, including Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. and CBS Interactive Inc., is invalid because it claims an unpatentable abstract idea, a Delaware federal judge ruled last week.

U.S. District Judge Sue L. Robinson granted summary judgment to the defendants that CyberFone's patent for a system of entering transaction data into databases is not eligible for a patent under Section 101 of the Patent Act, which prohibits patents on abstract ideas.
