FTC Urges FERC To Ease Entry Into Ancillary Services Markets

Law360, New York (September 12, 2012, 8:32 PM EDT) -- The Federal Trade Commission on Wednesday said it has recommended that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission lower its barriers for ancillary services companies to enter informal markets in electricity reliability, saying the move would increase competition.

According to the FTC's comment, dated Sept. 6 but publicly released Wednesday, more of these third-party ancillary services companies, which provide generators, storage devices and other resources to help electric utilities and other power producers compensate for voltage fluctuations, unanticipated outages or unexpected demand spikes, would also help improve reliability...
