Miami Docs Get 10 Years In $200M Medicare Kickbacks Scheme

Law360, New York (October 2, 2012, 2:28 PM EDT) -- Waving off requests for a new trial, a Florida federal judge on Monday sentenced two Miami-area doctors to 10 years in prison for participating in a $200 million Medicare fraud scheme involving kickbacks for referrals of drug-addicted and vegetative patients.

U.S. District Judge Patricia A. Seitz ordered Dr. Mark Willner and Dr. Alberto Ayala to pay $57 million and $87 million in restitution, respectively, as a result of their convictions earlier this year on one count of conspiracy to commit health care fraud. According to prosecutors,...
