NJ Lawmakers Want Forced Suspension For Indicted Pols

Law360, New York (October 3, 2012, 6:33 PM EDT) -- Elected officials in New Jersey who are indicted on corruption charges would be automatically suspended from their posts without pay under a proposed state constitutional amendment announced Tuesday.

The amendment's sponsor, state Sen. Shirley K. Turner, said the measure would ensure that constituents aren't stuck with a representative splitting time between his or her criminal defense and official duties. Indicted elected officials who claim they balance those obligations are deluding themselves, Turner contended.
