CFTC Quiets Critics With Record-Breaking Enforcement Year

Law360, New York (October 05, 2012, 4:56 PM ET) -- The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission said Friday it had filed a record number of enforcement actions in 2012 while levying $585 million in sanctions, showing the undersized agency is no lightweight despite some recent setbacks, experts said.

The CFTC said it had filed 102 enforcement actions so far this year, a slight increase over 2011 and a vast improvement from 2010, when it filed 57 actions. The CFTC also won $585 million in civil monetary penalties and restitution in 2012, compared with just $200 million...
