Hill Seeks Probes, More Oversight After Drug-Caused Meningitis

Law360, New York (October 9, 2012, 5:22 PM EDT) -- U.S. lawmakers are pushing for greater scrutiny of compounding pharmacies in response to a meningitis outbreak that as of Tuesday had killed 11 people, with House Democrats demanding an investigation, a senator calling for more regulation and bipartisan leaders in both houses requesting briefings.

Contaminated drugs created by New England Compounding Center and shipped to 23 states are suspected of causing the epidemic. More than 100 cases of meningitis have been reported in 10 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
