Privacy Risks Cited Over AT&T, Verizon's Location Sharing

Law360, New York (October 11, 2012, 5:30 PM EDT) -- A U.S. Government Accountability Office report released Thursday said AT&T Inc., Verizon Communications Inc. and other mobile phone companies' practice of collecting consumers' location data for purposes including targeted marketing poses a risk to privacy.

The GAO said its study, which ran from December 2011 to September, focused on the practices of carriers like AT&T and Verizon, operating system developers including Apple Inc. and Google Inc., manufacturers such as Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and Motorola Mobility LLC, as well as applications such as Facebook and Pandora....
