Sen. Boxer Presses FDA To Boost Oversight Of Seafood Labeling

Law360, New York (October 16, 2012, 4:31 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration needs to toughen its enforcement of labeling requirements for imported seafood, Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., said Monday, citing the high prevalence of mislabeling and the health risks it poses to pregnant women and others.

In a letter to FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg, the senator pointed to a recent study from the conservation group Oceana that found as much as 55 percent of the seafood it tested in American cities was mislabeled. The great majority of seafood consumed in the U.S....
