SEC's Schapiro Continues Push For CFTC Merger

Law360, New York (October 23, 2012, 3:45 PM EDT) -- U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Mary Schapiro said Tuesday her agency should merge with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to eliminate regulatory overlaps, a proposal she first backed in 2009 after the financial crisis.

“My view is that there’s an enormous amount of logic to combining the two agencies,” Schapiro said at a meeting of securities industry professionals in New York. The entities have similar responsibilities in the financial industry, including regulation of over-the-counter derivatives trading, she said.
