Obama Signs Bill Exempting US Airlines From EU Carbon Plan

Law360, New York (November 27, 2012, 6:52 PM EST) -- President Barack Obama on Tuesday signed into law the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme Prohibition Act of 2011, which will allow the secretary of transportation to shield American passenger airlines from participation in the European Union’s controversial cap-and-trade program.

The bill is a victory for the American airline industry, allowing carriers to avoid the requirements of a program that has been derided by members of Congress as an unfair and illegal tax on the emissions of aircraft flying into and out of the EU. Industry estimates...
