"Pay Or Play" Laws Will Lead To Layoffs: Study

Law360, New York (November 12, 2007, 12:00 AM EST) -- One in 10 low-wage workers could lose their jobs as a result of proposed “pay or play” laws which require employers to provide health insurance to their workers or pay a fine, according to a new study by Cornell University economists.

The study, released Friday by nonprofit group Employment Policies Institute, found that employers who are forced to provide insurance to workers would need to compensate by cutting back in other areas, including possible job eliminations.
