EU Court Adviser Kicks Soccer Bodies' TV Rights Appeal

Law360, New York (December 12, 2012, 5:58 PM EST) -- European Union members can require free television broadcasts of World Cup and European Football Championship matches, a top adviser to Europe's highest court said Wednesday, urging it to nix appeals seeking to protect FIFA's and UEFA's ability to sell exclusive broadcast rights to paid-TV providers.

Advocate General Niilo Jaaskinen told the European Court of Justice that Belgian and British laws mandating that the events be broadcast in their respective countries for free don't violate EU law.
