Heineken, Bavaria Can't Ax €219M Beer Cartel Fines

Law360, New York (December 19, 2012, 4:01 PM EST) -- The European Union's highest court on Wednesday upheld €219 million ($290 million) in cartel fines against Heineken NV and fellow Dutch brewer Bavaria NV for fixing prices on beer in the Netherlands.

The European Court of Justice rejected Heineken's efforts to overturn or further trim its €198 million antitrust penalty, ruling that the fines for the Dutch cartel did not have to be in line with those that the European Commission doled out in an earlier case over a Belgian beer price-fixing plot.
