Public Hospitals Want CMS Leeway On ACA Safety Net Cuts

Law360, New York (January 16, 2013, 3:01 PM EST) -- Public hospitals on Tuesday urged the Centers for Medicaid & Medicare Services to expand its definitions of uncompensated care and uninsured patients when the agency begins rulemaking that will lay out cuts to disproportionate-share hospital payments mandated by the Affordable Care Act.

CMS hasn't yet begun the rulemaking process on the disproportionate-share hospital, or DSH, payment cuts, set to go into effect in October 2013. DSH payments are made by Medicare and Medicaid to help hospitals offset the costs of caring for poor and uninsured patients....
