Va. High Court Overturns $17.5M Exxon Asbestos Verdict

Law360, New York (January 16, 2013, 8:12 PM EST) -- The Virginia Supreme Court reversed a $17.5 million verdict against ExxonMobil Corp. last week in an asbestos lawsuit brought by a former shipyard worker, holding that a lower court should have allowed evidence the shipyard knew about the risk of asbestos exposure.

Rubert Minton worked for the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co. from 1956 to 1993, where he was regularly exposed to the asbestos that allegedly caused his mesothelioma. Exxon regularly brought their ships to the shipyard for repair from 1966 to 1977.
