Buy.com Faces $500M Suit Over Phone Number Collection

Law360, New York (February 8, 2013, 1:27 PM EST) -- An online shopper lodged a $500 million putative class action in California federal court Thursday accusing media and home goods retailer Buy.com Inc. of illegally requiring its customers to provide their telephone numbers in order to complete credit card purchases on its website.

Buy.com, which is owned by Japanese retailer Rakuten Inc., racked up more than $500 million worth of Song-Beverly Credit Card Act violations by making customers list their phone numbers on a preprinted online purchase form before any transaction would go through, according to...
