Shell Drilling Woes Caused By Lax Contractor Oversight: DOI

Law360, New York (March 14, 2013, 8:15 PM EDT) -- Royal Dutch Shell PLC’s Arctic drilling program suffered from lax contractor oversight, leading to a series of violations and delays that ultimately prevented the energy giant from drilling off the coast of Alaska last summer, offshore regulators said in a report released Thursday.

The Interior Department’s assessment of Shell’s Arctic drilling operations blamed the company’s failure to secure permission to drill on poor management of the companies it relied on for several key components of its program, including development of a crucial oil-containment system.
