Google, BlackBerry Urge FTC To Probe Patent 'Privateers'

Law360, New York (April 5, 2013, 3:27 PM EDT) -- Google Inc. and BlackBerry urged the Federal Trade Commission on Friday to launch an antitrust investigation into companies that sell patents to nonpracticing entities that then assert the patents against the company's competitors, a practice known as "privateering."

In comments submitted to the agency along with EarthLink Inc. and Red Hat Inc., Google and BlackBerry said a wide-ranging probe of businesses that engage in privateering is necessary because the practice "poses numerous perils to competition, consumers and innovation."
