Brazil Fines McDonald's $1.6M For Happy Meal Ads

Law360, New York (April 23, 2013, 4:34 PM EDT) -- A Brazilian regulator hit McDonald’s Corp. with a $1.6 million fine on Monday over its use of children’s characters and toys in promoting Happy Meals, saying the advertisements encourage young people to consume unhealthy foods.

Procon SP, the consumer protection agency of Sao Paulo, fined the company 3.2 million reals ($1.59 million) through McDonald's franchisee Arcos Dorados Holding Inc. under an abusive advertising provision of the state’s consumer code, the government of Sao Paolo announced Monday.
