Health Management Reveals SEC Accounting Probe

Law360, New York (May 3, 2013, 4:28 PM EDT) -- Health Management Associates Inc. has been targeted in a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission probe into its accounting practices and revenues, among several other regulatory investigations over the company’s billing practices, it revealed Thursday.

According to a regulatory filing by the Naples, Fla.-based hospital operator, it received an SEC subpoena April 25 that sought documents related to its accounts receivable, contractual adjustments across its approximately 70 hospitals, billing writedowns and reserves available to cover "doubtful" accounts.
