Firms Do Damage Control After Pay Boosts

Law360, New York (January 11, 2008, 12:00 AM ET) -- With associates' salaries and billable-hour requirements on the rise, some law firms are shifting into damage control mode to address clients' concern for their pocketbooks — and attorneys' worries about quality of life.

Last year's widespread increase in starting salaries for associates raised ire in some client circles by contributing to hikes in law firm billing rates.

The move hasn't been all positive for lawyers either, with fast-inflating billable-hour requirements eating into the personal sphere, leaving law firms pondering the true price of competition.
