CMS Just Getting Started On Hospital Readmission Penalties

Law360, New York (May 6, 2013, 7:28 PM EDT) -- Health care experts have a message for hospitals already up in arms about Medicare’s newly expanded list of the medical problems it looks at when penalizing providers for readmissions within 30 days of discharge: This is only the beginning.

In its 1,424-page proposed rule issued April 26, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services added two new conditions — chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and replacements of the hip or knee — that can lead to reimbursement reductions if patients return too quickly.
