Mott's Loses Bid To Trademark Name For Baby Food

Law360, New York (May 29, 2013, 1:16 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has rejected Mott's LLP's bid to trademark the juice and applesauce maker's name on baby food products, ruling that the company's founder Samuel Mott is not famous enough for his name to be used as a trademark.

The USPTO's Trademark Trial and Appeal Board ruled that “Mott”, which is already trademarked for use on other company-brand food products, is merely a surname that cannot serve as a trademark for the baby food products. The board mailed its decision April 30....
