Israel Revamps Drug Patent Extension Policy

Law360, New York (November 10, 2005, 12:00 AM EST) -- In an unprecedented move expected to align the interests of international pharmaceutical companies, the Israeli Patent Office will extend pharmaceutical patents in its jurisdiction based on extensions provided in other countries.

Israel’s unique agreement will benefit both its sturdy generics industry and its growing innovator industry, which are often part of the same companies.

The decision, reached with input from a group of international pharmaceutical companies, clarifies Israeli patent laws that were updated years ago but have been interpreted vaguely by their patent office.
