Ontario Appeals Court OKs $50B Suit Against Tobacco Cos.

Law360, New York (June 3, 2013, 8:12 PM EDT) -- A Canadian appeals court Thursday denied a bid from six foreign tobacco companies to toss a $50 billion lawsuit brought against them over heath care costs from smoking-related illnesses, saying the lower court properly exercised its jurisdiction.

The decision came after Justice Barbara Ann Conway of the Superior Court of Justice in January 2012 denied the companies’ motion to dismiss, ruling that the court had jurisdiction over the case.
