Axed Catholic-School Teacher Wins Pregnancy Bias Suit

Law360, New York (June 4, 2013, 7:48 PM EDT) -- An Ohio federal jury on Tuesday found that the Archdiocese of Cincinnati engaged in unlawful pregnancy discrimination when it fired an unmarried Catholic-school teacher after she became pregnant through artificial insemination.

The jury said the archdiocese should pay the former teacher, Christa Dias, $20,000 in compensatory damages, $51,000 in back pay and an additional $100,000 in punitive damages. Dias had also sued the two schools from which she was terminated, but the jury did not find the individual schools liable for damages.
