Wal-Mart, Gap, Others Hit With Database Search IP Suits

Law360, New York (June 10, 2013, 11:18 PM EDT) -- Smart Search Concepts LLC on Friday filed virtually identical suits against Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Neiman Marcus Inc., Gap Inc. and several other retailers in Delaware federal court accusing them of infringing patents covering a database search engine and method.

Southampton, N.Y.-based Smart Search said the search functions of the defendants' websites made unauthorized use of its patented technology that can search a database "on-the-fly" and generate results in a template that includes descriptions of and links to various categories of data, according to the complaint....
