House Panel Approves Bill Easing Coal Ash Regulation

Law360, New York (June 19, 2013, 5:26 PM EDT) -- Legislation preventing federal environmental regulators from classifying toxic coal ash as a hazardous substance advanced to the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives after winning support from a panel of lawmakers on Wednesday.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee voted 31-16 in favor of the Coal Residuals and Management Act, which would leave toxic coal ash regulation in the hands of the states. A similar version of the legislation was approved by the House two years ago, but a companion bill failed to make headway...
