Federal Subcontractors Gain New Whistleblower Protections

Law360, New York (July 1, 2013, 6:01 PM EDT) -- New whistleblower protections for federal contractors took effect Monday, extending to employees of federal subcontractors, who previously had no legal protection against employment retaliation if they reported wrongdoing directly to the government.

The changes are part of the 2013 National Defense Authorization Act, which also expanded protection for employees of prime contractors. Under the new law, contractor employees are eligible for whistleblower protection when they report wrongdoing to supervisors within their own companies, in addition to the existing protection for complaints made directly to the government....
