Medicare Doc Pay Must Be Based On Quality, Official Says

Law360, New York (July 10, 2013, 2:04 PM EDT) -- A top Medicare official on Wednesday told the Senate Finance Committee that it will take about five years before the federal government’s much-maligned formula for paying doctors can be fully replaced, and that underperforming physicians sooner or later must be paid less.

Jonathan Blum, a deputy administrator at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, echoed emerging legislative proposals by calling for an interim period of four to five years in which doctors receive stable payments with small annual increases.
