WellPoint Pays $1.7M Over Patient Data Breach

Law360, New York (July 12, 2013, 2:09 PM ET) -- WellPoint Inc. has agreed to pay $1.7 million to settle claims over potential privacy violations related to the personal data of more than 612,000 of its customers due to an allegedly improperly secured online database, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced Thursday.

The settlement ends claims that the managed care organization failed to have policies or technical safeguards in place to ensure only authorized users could use its online application database, therefore allowing improper access to the protected health information of its customers...
