MetLife Blasts Inclusion In Short List Of Potential SIFIs

Law360, New York (July 17, 2013, 2:53 PM EDT) -- MetLife Inc. on Tuesday questioned financial regulators for moving closer to naming it a systemically important financial institution, a designation that would saddle the company with tougher supervision, as details emerged about earlier votes proposing the status for giants like American International Group Inc.

The Financial Stability Oversight Council has advanced MetLife to the final stage in a process for designating nonbank companies that would threaten the country's economic stability if they buckled, according to Steven Kandarian, the chairman, president and CEO of MetLife.
