Anti-Epilepsy Drugs Increase Suicide Risk: FDA

Law360, New York (February 1, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- In alarming news for a slew of pharmaceutical giants, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has warned that medications used to combat epilepsy tend to double the risk of suicidal tendencies in patients.

On Thursday, the FDA issued a strong word of caution regarding the anti-epilepsy drugs, stating that an extensive study of nearly a dozen drugs had revealed that patients being treated with the medications exhibited almost twice as many suicidal thoughts and behavior as those taking a placebo.
