AmEx Coughs Up $5.2M For Facilitating Cuba Travel

Law360, New York (July 22, 2013, 6:23 PM ET) -- The travel services unit of American Express Co. agreed Monday to pay $5.2 million in civil penalties for allowing its clients in other countries to travel to Cuba in apparent violations of U.S. economic sanctions on the island nation.

The Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control said American Express Travel Related Services Company Inc., known as TRS, had improperly issued more than 14,000 tickets for travel between Cuba and countries other than United States between December 2005 and November 2011.
