CFIUS Takes Closer Look At Smithfield Deal

Law360, New York (July 24, 2013, 12:38 PM EDT) -- National security regulators will conduct an extended review of a deal to sell Smithfield Foods Inc., the biggest U.S. pork producer, to a Chinese food supplier, Smithfield said Wednesday.

Virginia-based Smithfield said it had received notice that the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States would be conducting a second-phase, 45-day review of the $7.1 billion deal, which has raised concerns about U.S. food safety and supply.
