Obama Taps GFI Group Exec For CFTC Commissioner

Law360, Los Angeles (August 1, 2013, 11:04 PM EDT) -- President Barack Obama on Thursday nominated GFI Group Inc. executive vice president J. Christopher Giancarlo to a commissioner post at the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission, according to the White House. 

If confirmed, Giancarlo, a Republican, will succeed former Commissioner Jill Sommers, who stepped down in July, a year before the end of her term. Sommers had served on the commission since 2007 and oversaw the CFTC's investigation into the collapse of broker-dealer MF Global Inc., which yielded sweeping charges against the firm and former CEO Jon Corzine.
