House Committee Chair Won't Pull EPA Health Data Subpoena

Law360, New York (August 9, 2013, 3:19 PM EDT) -- The chairman of the House Science Committee on Thursday refused to withdraw his subpoena of health data used to develop U.S. Environmental Protection Agency air regulations, disputing claims from a fellow lawmaker that the request violates the personal privacy of more than 1 million citizens.

Rep. Lamar Smith, R-Texas, said that any personal health information included in the data will be protected and removed before the information becomes public, and insisted that subpoena is necessary to provide critical congressional oversight of the taxpayer-funded research.
