New Zealand Walks Back Ambitious Carbon Reduction Target

Law360, New York (August 16, 2013, 5:24 PM ET) -- New Zealand's government is backing off aggressive carbon emissions reduction goals, committing Friday to cutting greenhouse gas output to 5 percent below 1990 levels by 2020 rather than the 10 to 20 percent it had previously offered during international negotiations.

Climate Change Minister Tim Groser said the unconditional target reflects the country's economic circumstances and shows that the country is “doing its fair share” to tackle global climate change. The figure should also provide much-valued certainty to domestic stakeholders, according to Groser.
